Clever

This is clever, pulls no punches and hurts real practiced. I was butchered by the sharpest blade from a talented swordsman. His weapon of choice? His words. (And I honey my swords)

Byron is monster among men: too brilliant, too handsome, too wealthy, too insane. Yous know the guy you lot fear to never run across in a dark aisle? Byron'due south that guy times a meg. Hell, you don't want to see Byron in the calorie-free of day. He's stone cold and this is his story. "Better the Devil You Know" is an erotic horror thriller that read similar a movie. We get to not only read Byron'south serial killer rap sheet but experience his dirty deeds at different periods of his life.

It'due south gruesome.

And every tag on this book is fully earned. Because I don't desire to give abroad a major plot twist, my favorite graphic symbol from the book happens to exist the other guy! I've wanted to read a book starring him...in quite old. It'south been done before but I liked the author'south way writing him. Plus, the earth edifice was top notch (as usual) I could see every gush of blood, every horrid detail...oh, I quivered in delight.

My fucked up scale is warped, seriously warped. I thought information technology could have went even further than it did...and I don't know if the homo torso can sustain the torture performed. The main players impressed me with their skills.

Hands down, one of my favorite reads of 2015.

It read effortless. Zip read as if information technology was written for daze value. Information technology was depraved and classy. If the tags don't turn you off and you don't need romance (this is so not), I can't recommend this enough.

P.S. I'thou gaga for this encompass. Cover, title, volume, the unabridged concept is a win-win-win for me.

My mom loves movies. She goes all the time and gets amped up around award season over which movies she'southward already seen and which ones need to be seen. Plans are fabricated. Distances are sometimes travelled. She drags dad forth because she's a giver like me. He's a good sport about it and e'er has kind words, though I suspect he'd much rather see movies wherein shit gets diddled upwardly rather than arty indie flicks merely whatevs. Information technology'south their affair and it'southward cute as hell. But you lot know how those award movies can exist, right? Critics Beloved them. Audiences… not then much. But back to mi madre. She does this thing when I ask her how such and such movie (read: intense) was. She usually makes (what I've termed) The Big Optics with the associated double eyebrow raise and says, 'it was good, and then and then was phenomenal, but I'll never demand to come across information technology again.' and that, my friends, sums upwardly how I experience virtually this book.

BeyBey can write. This is not news. Objectively speaking, the storyline is on point. How everything comes together was perfectly executed. The secondary characters made the feel worthwhile. The characterization of Byron is vivid in its monstrosity; he has no redeeming qualities. He'due south the sort of character that inspires and stars in my nightmares because he's a real, everyday monster. I had one niggle with regard to the "psychosis" mentioned, but that's an occupational gamble and I'm not going to separate hairs over it.

The story is gripping and if you're a horror fan, you're going to be boozer with happiness like a cat in a pile of catnip. Just I am a squishy cupcake and a lover not a fighter. I unabashedly prefer sex to violence, so this was a struggle for me. If you're going to put rape and torture in my books then I demand redemption or retribution in the cease. Neither occurred here. My reactions were visceral and a couple times I thought I was going to have to abandon transport which is a testament to the power of the writing and how talented BeyBey is, that I pushed myself to terminate because I wanted to know.

Will I read it again? Fuck no! I deleted it from my kindle already. Am I sorry I read information technology? No. It was an experience. An experience alike to the madre'due south most recent experience with Black Mass. Once was plenty.

The book is paranormal. Zilch is what is seems. The task description of the three main characters is not actually clear until the last few pages. And so there will exist a kind of happy (???) ending.

I read a few reviews that were proverb that if you manage to get through the commencement affiliate, you will exist fine with the rest of the book. I completely disagree. I found some of the scenes later on specially disturbing. And there are triggers there for me that I would definitely avoid in the books that I read. Only we are talking almost the devil here, and then I suppose anything can exist included.

"If I have already died, then I cannot experience mortal pain, tin can I? The fearfulness of death is what drives man to succumb to his hurting—fearfulness weakens the resolve. Without the fear of expiry, what is left?"

Byron is a sick fuck. if yous read the synopsis for this novel, y'all could probably come to that conclusion yourself. only for some stupid reason, I underestimated his ability to do fucked up shit. *sigh* what a grave miscalculation I made.

before I was about 24% through the novel, it didn't seem too bad. the gory scenes made me question my own beingness, and the writing was a piddling confusing, merely everything was going alright. until Gloria and Byron'southward scene takes place.

in the scene, Gloria and Byron are in a hotel room after they hooked up. I'yard fairly certain Gloria is a transgender adult female, and she needed money to pay for a legal proper name change and surgery, so she did these "transactions" for money to pay for that. and after the two hookup, Byron figures this out. then what does he do? he drugs her and explains how he'll cut off her dick, of form.

"I'm going to tell you exactly what I'g going to practise to y'all, my beautiful Gloria. Get-go, I'thou going to cut this pathetic, unwanted, pitiful little penis off your beautiful torso. Then, I'm going to make some cuts and open y'all up"—Byron's breathing became heavier and his face was flushed—"And so I'm going to brand love to you, Gloria. I'grand going to brand you a real woman. I know, I know… You probably didn't imagine your offset fourth dimension as a existent adult female would be with a gay man. In fact, it might take a actually long time for me to accomplish orgasm again, just the blood should aid. Hopefully, you last that long."

and as if this wasn't bad enough, Gloria brings up the point of being just another statistic after she dies
"I'm a fucking statistic. A stereotype. Another black tranny murdered in cold claret. She wondered if anyone would even claim her body."

which quite literally bankrupt my heart in two. I wanted to feel better after she reappeared in the story numerous times equally an angel or some type of hallucination, but I couldn't. at the end of the mean solar day, she would be just another tragic case or upsetting statistic instead of a real person.

then yep, Gloria'southward backstory affiliate made me want to cry. but when I thought back on this novel and Byron's character, I realized something: Byron commits these sadistic crimes to fulfill his fantasy, he gets away with it (in the mortal world), and then he gets to have a powerful position in hell. yes, in real life, lots of people do horrible crime like Byron and get abroad with information technology, but that'south not the point.

Byron literally gets to kill innocent people left and right in horrific ways to feed his fantasy, and has no remorse for his actions. he gets a somewhat happy ending considering he's some type of rex in hell, but his victims didn't become that. no, his victims just have their corpses in the ground, all because they accidentally stumbled upon Byron.

and yep, I know, this is very clearly marketed as a night and gruesome volume, and so I shouldn't be complaining. but I fucking am because this shit makes me upset. why would I root for a character that has no moral or emotional development later on killing endless innocent individuals? why would I? I encounter no reason to, and that'south why I was infuriated with Byron's grapheme.

to add onto my huge frustrations with Byron, I didn't like the writing. a lot of times, I had no clue what was going on. and if I did, and then the scene/chapter would end so chop-chop that I wouldn't have the full picture that the writer was trying to depict. of class, this is heavily subjective. but it still upset me a fleck considering I was trying my best to enjoy the book, withal it was difficult to because the writing made me not desire to read the novel at all.

in conclusion, "Better The Devil You Know" is a novel built on a very creative premise with unique characters that didn't work for me. only you shouldn't even be surprised at this point. if I tin can't similar the primary protagonist, and then how the fuck am I supposed to like the story? mhm, that's what I thought.

Friction match was pretty dope and had some evolution on the horizon, simply he deserves someone meliorate than Byron. sad, someone had to say it. doesn't matter what my opinion on the two is anyway, since near people who read this volume probably ship them. Byron is a sick fuck that I don't requite a shit about, and I think that this book could've been executed a lot amend. but the story was idea-provoking, and then that's a plus. not sure if I would actually recommend this though.

You're the sick piece of shit.

Heh, Maybe? But I own information technology.

Before I go into the review of this book, let me tell you a fleck about myself. I like dark books. I like things that make you kinda sick to your tummy when you read them. The darker, more shocking, more WTAF is going on and why practise I like information technology and the extreme nausea inducing the better. Now, I tin't spotter the aforementioned subject affair, simply I tin can read the things someone would watch and be okay with information technology. Simply my admiration for the night and twisted books, the scary books started many years ago with a collection of short stories by Stephen King titled, Skeleton Crew.

You lot see, I read Skeleton Crew in the 6th grade, shockingly the library allowed one of their young repeat customers to check it out, and I did a book written report on it. The written report focused on my favorite short story, which remains my favorite to this day, "Survivor Type." The story is told in diary form of one Richard Pine, a surgeon and heroin addict on a deserted island slowly going out of his mind. Richard is hungry and well, there is no food but he does have: Four gallons of water, a sewing kit and a first-help kit. Why is that important to the review of this book? Because at the age of xi, I was hooked on a story about a surgeon who decides to slowly amputate parts of his body as sustenance. You can imagine the call home from my instructor to my parents nearly my book report and how inappropriate it was of me to read such a graphic and gruesome story. *grins* See, the darkness started early with this ginger and even today, hearing Lady Fingers mentioned, makes me recollect fondly of Richard.

Just my love of that story and honestly of Stephen King was not just due to the darkness but the fantastic words that told the story. Annihilation dark or "tough" to read, has to be written well or information technology'south only for shock value and that does zero but leave me cold. Well written stories, no affair the content, are merely that. Well written and well written stories that accept you lot to another place you'd never imagine going before.

And then on to this book, when I saw SheRead's review and she mentioned information technology was for lovers of the dark and twisted, my senses tingled. When I read the sample, I was stunned and nevertheless completely intrigued by Byron and then the twist happened.

Holymotherfuckingshitballs, was that always a brilliant twist and I knew correct and so, I had to run and purchase the book.

Wow.

Doesn't this feel sort of similar a horror movie?

Totally, but and so well written (exercise I demand to start counting how many times I take said that?) that it could only be in volume class. This author, killed me with his words. I have been flayed and tuckered and every bit of information technology was worth it. It was exquisite torture.

And that title! I love a good title when it really fits the story and yeah, um… hang on …

Y'all starting time a chat you can't even finish it.

Where was I over again? Oh aye. Reviewing this volume.

Anyway, the world building is amazing and this is coming from a lazy reader who balks at world building due to the corporeality of work it takes but this, was easy to autumn into and become i with the darkness. It was seductive and yeah, really skillful.

Now, I refuse to spoil this volume. I will say as SheRead's did, read the sample and if you lot can handle it, motility on because it'due south so freaking fracking worth it.

This was like a Danse Macabre version of The Twilight Zone which is one of my favorite all time shows. Each episode was rich with night irony that left this viewer breathless with its beauty and this, believe it or not, does the same. And that end? Holymotherfuckingshitballs, information technology was first-class!

I will leave you with this: Heed the tags, listen the disclaimer because all of that is in this story. All of it is in that location, and I'll admit to some of it, being well… titillating.

Oh, nothing like that, mon cher monster…

Just and so once more, maybe it is? *smirks*

This is horrific Simply compelling none the less...you know in that way that you can't accept your eyes off something awful every bit it's happening? You kind of want to look away but you can't?

Aye, well in the same mode, I said to myself that this was completely NOT my kind of thing and was going to mark information technology equally "non-for-me", simply then I was curious enough to read the sample – something happens in it that fabricated me desire to observe out how this was going to play out...so I bought the ebook and read information technology in 1 sitting.

I have to admit, my initial thought when reading the blurb and reviews was "errr, NO THANKS!", specially seeing some of the quotes...merely, no...only then I kept seeing interesting reviews and the fashion the blurb was written was intriguing. I accept to admit that growing up I was fond to the horror genre! My friends and I used to get xviii-rated horror films out the video store when we were about 10yo and scare ourselves stupid and for years I read everything that I could get my hands on that was classed as horror. I call up this is why when I switched to reading fantasy/sci-fi in my after teens, I ever preferred the darker, grittier reads. Even now when I relish a huge range of books, I still find the darker ones the most delicious of all.

And so yeah, I can't exist blamed for being tempted to read this! I mean expect at that cover, read the blurb! And I just kept seeing the book come upwards in my feed...then I couldn't resist giving it a become!

In the end, this wasn't actually what I had expected at all. I felt the worst part was in the sample – information technology was undeniably sick. Actually, really ill. And every bit many others have said, if you can get through this, you tin read the volume. There is a lot more horrid stuff throughout, but this first part seemed the most awful to me. If you give this a go, you lot have to remember, this is Not a romance, not at all. You need to grade information technology as fucked upward horror (with a flake of a paranormal twist).

I did really like the manner that we saw about petty mini-stories within the overall story of diverse victims - through these we kind of see a little more of the overall story revealed. And I must have missed how information technology said "paranormal" in the blurb, as this part came equally a surprise to me when I came across information technology in the story...although some of this part seemed a little underdeveloped, I liked how this was almost a second part to the storyline about.

I won't say much more other than that this was most definitely ill and twisted, and Bey, when everyone asked you for "dark"...wow...you most definitely delivered, even if it wasn't quite what I would accept expected. Kudos for writing something so horrific!

I was quite worried how this would all stop, as it seemed a difficult one to finish off accordingly, but I think information technology was relatively fitting.

So yep, this most definitely won't be for everyone, but I would urge people to give the sample a go before ruling this ane out. You can read an excerpt directly from Bey's blog if yous want to give it a become: http://www.beydeckard.com/web log/ameliorate...

I notwithstanding couldn't quite decide what rating to give even after finishing...the writing pulled me along and I didn't put it down, but in that location were a few elements I wasn't as dandy on around the paranormal part, then I've settled on 4 stars overall. 4 stars on GR is meant to mean 'I really liked it' - in this instance I'grand using it to mean I really liked existence horrified by it? existence scared by it? yeah something similar that... :)

Despite all this, I gave this book 5 stars. Why? Well, underneath the psychopathic sexual proclivities of both MCs lay the idea of goodness. The idea of goodness in Hell, and that hurting served a higher purpose.

Then, despite all the triggers and extremely trigger-happy depictions of sexual animalism and torture, this volume was about condign our true selves and putting that nature to its best uses.

This isn't a love story. Not in the to the lowest degree. Just Bey Deckard does provide the states with the most logical of endings given the realities of the world he depicted. Well written and ridiculously imaginative, this is an amazing volume if you can stomach the bad, and know that you'll get your reward in the end.

Not many volition make it through the first affiliate: it's barbarous, and this comes a alert that this is pure horror, written purely for the darkest of nighttime reader. Don't go there if you don't like it dark and delving into sick minds.

Subsequently I got my "I survived Bey'southward first affiliate" T-shirt, in comes the brothers... And oh boy... difficult... dark.. emotional...

Sexually night books have always fallen into two categories in my heed. The get-go has a warped lead who mentally or physically tortures an unwilling subject so deeply that my psyche winces, but despite everything, the recipient and I all the same develop Stockholm syndrome for him. The second has a completely evil part who mutilates or gruesomely murders the victims of his sexual urges in graphic item. He pushes me too far, causing a loss of all emotional connection which turns the material into a bad read for me.

Improve the Devil You Know made it's own new category. I had that sick feeling of going too far during more than i scene; even so, my attraction to the plot didn't pause. Also while throwing out these horrors on the surface, in that location's a unlike storyline bubbling underneath. The reader is presented with a mystery and a differing outlook than the usual. At that place's a lot of shock factor, but there'south also intelligence.

Byron is medieval and savage upon several people during his life. The accounts of some of his 'dates' are given. Although the story is told in third person, the accounts are from the point of view of Byron'south prey. Each tale gives further clues in the overall scheme of things.

This is ane of the darkest books I've always read. Parts of information technology were and so disturbing that I don't even know how to convey the depravity. It is absolutely not for many, merely for a sure audience, it is perfection. Amend the Devil You lot Know is horrific, smart and beyond rare.

Improve the Devil You Know is a foreign book to me. On one manus, I actually like how it didn't pull its punches. On the other, I'1000 thinking, "what's the point?"

The story begins with Byron's pastime of sorts: one that makes even the fictional serial killer lover in me cringe. If you can't tummy the kickoff chapter, then I would probably stop in that location as the story makes a motif of Byron's artful endeavors. Just somewhen, things take a paranormal twist of sorts, and this is where I kind of felt the story going astray. While I expected things to become fleshed out more, all that happened was me not really "getting it." There's no romance, no suspense, and no existent direction. I was let down, because I felt like Better the Devil You Know had all this Free energy, but information technology wasn't really channeled into something meaningful. Certain, at that place's an ending. Merely I didn't really empathise what resolution came out of it, as I didn't even realize at that place was a conflict/problem to be resolved.

So basically, if you're looking to read nearly a sociopathic murderer, and so this is information technology. Just don't expect much of a story to continue with information technology.

I don't similar bad things happening to people, not in real life, merely in fictional books it's open slather – but I have to be in the mood. Knowing your own limits and your idea of enjoyable reading is of import considering this is non a comfortable read. It also doesn't ease upwards because bad things practice happen to adept people throughout. It truly is macabre, although the writing is too interspersed with tongue in cheek humour. I didn't love the ii master players, but I did find them intriguing. The writing also had a hook or two that made me want to keep reading - the psychology, the constant unknown, the politics. Because the author put his foot downwards and unabashedly went for it with his writing, it has such a verve near it. I love the championship, it'due south so apt, the world building was pretty damn good as well. The book admittedly accomplished its primary aim. And, well, I'll exist honest, I have this total soft spot for Gloria. Hellishly interesting and impure reading.

At that place are quite a few reasons Mr. Deckard is on my car read listing, not the least of which is his power to suck me into any type of story, oftentimes those genres I would normally steer clear of, such as sci-fi, or, in this instance, gorey, gruesome series killer craziness. I acknowledge that I didn't read the blurb much past the warnings, which should most definitely be heeded. So, when I began this story, I didn't realize it was a paranormal-ish tale. That being said, this starts out with a big bang and literally dives right into the middle of Byron'due south gorey life.

The first affiliate, alone, was one of the most disturbingly gruesome scenes I've read, and I cringed the whole style through information technology. I had the same feelings I had when I watched my first SAW flick. Byron is a bit of a mysterious fellow, and information technology takes a few chapters to really get a sense of what is going on. Although, just when you think yous understand things, it twists in another direction. Byron is a serial killer who is extremely creative in carrying out his killings. He has the assist of his PA, Gloria, who turns out to be as, if not more than, creepier than Byron. Everything eventually catches up to Byron when he meets his end and Match takes him to Hell to pay for his sins.

Lucifer is quite the interesting grapheme. He has been lording over peoples' souls for a long time, and it seems he is getting a bit tired. There is a connection with Byron, and even Gloria plays a role. Needless to say, there is more than than one twist in this story that kept me on my toes until the cease.

This story is put together as craftily as one of Byron's killings. I'grand not certain how to describe the writing other than to say that information technology just stands out in its masterfulness. If the horror/gorey aspect of this story isn't for you, please stay away. Still, if you can handle or even relish the cringing and slight nausea of a creepy thriller, I highly recommend information technology and promise the writing volition polish through for y'all as much as it did for me.

I loved this volume. Especially the offset chapter.....that almost gave me an adrenaline rush. Byron was demented and fucked upwards simply goddamn (pun intended) was he creative in his torture.

The paranormal aspect threw me a footling at the start simply Lucifer charmed me.😆😈 It was the best kind of nighttime erotic, guilty pleasure read. 🖤
